BOWIE, Md. – Luis Ortiz struck out a season-high 10 batters over five innings for Altoona as both the Curve and Baysox struck out 12 batters each, but Bowie managed two key runs off Ortiz late as they held on for a 4-1 defeat of Altoona at Prince Goerge’s Stadium on Friday night.

Ortiz, who missed his career-high of 11 strikeouts by one, did not walk a batter in his five innings of work. He allowed a solo home run to Connor Norby in the first inning but strung together a stretch of four innings of just two hits allowed. It was first 10 strikeout performance for Altoona since Roansy Contreras on June 16, 2021 in Erie.

Colton Cowser opened the sixth inning with an infield single off Ortiz. Norby followed with a single of his own to right, where Lolo Sanchez tried to throw out Cowser at third but threw the ball away, allowing a run to score. Joey Ortiz then drove a hard ground ball to third that went off the mitt of a diving Jared Triolo and trickeled into shallow left field, an RBI-double to end Ortiz’s outing.

Colin Selby tossed two innings of relief, allowing one run in the seventh inning on a Cowser sacrifice fly after a John Rhodes triple. JC Flowers worked a scoreless eighth inning.

Malcom Nuñez had two of Altoona’s three hits in the game, including a solo home run to center field off Bowie starter Justin Armbruester. It was the fourth for Nuñez since joining Altoona and his 21st overall on the season.

Armbruester struck out eight batters himself in a solid 5.2 innings of work. Griffin McLarty earned the win, striking out three batters in an inning of relief before Tyler Burch earned his second save of the season.

Endy Rodriguez saw his 12-game hitting streak come to an end in the loss, going 0-for-4. Altoona falls to 1-3 on the week against Bowie.

Altoona and Bowie continue their six-game series on Saturday night at 6:35 p.m. RHP Garrett Stallings will start for Bowie, with Altoona sending RHP Kyle Nicolas.
