Fayetteville Falls to Down East in Fourth of July Battle

Fayetteville, NC - The Fayetteville Woodpeckers (33-42, 2-8) fell behind in the fifth inning of Monday’s Fourth of July contest and trailed the rest of the way in a 9-3 loss to the Down East Wood Ducks (39-37, 6-4) with a record crowd of 6,482 in attendance at Segra Stadium.

Fayetteville, NC - The Fayetteville Woodpeckers (33-42, 2-8) fell behind in the fifth inning of Monday’s Fourth of July contest and trailed the rest of the way in a 9-3 loss to the Down East Wood Ducks (39-37, 6-4) with a record crowd of 6,482 in attendance at Segra Stadium.

Alex Santos (L, 0-7) started his night on the mound with four scoreless innings before allowing two runs in the fifth and a two-run homer to Jose Rodriguez in the sixth. Despite allowing the four total runs, Santos still tallied seven strikeouts and pitched six innings, a season-long mark.

Following a rain delay that paused action in the eighth inning, the Woodpeckers broke out their best swings in the bottom of the ninth when trailing 9-1. Tyler Whitaker tripled home Logan Cerny and Rainer Rivas made it a 9-3 game with an RBI single off Jackson Leath to cap the scoring.

After an off day on Tuesday, the six-game series will continue on Wednesday night with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm at Segra Stadium. The Woodpeckers are projected to start RHP Bryant Salgado (5-4, 4.42 ERA) and the Wood Ducks will counter with Emiliano Teodo (2-3, 3.32 ERA)
