Zebulon, NC - In a ballgame where runs came at a premium, the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (33-38, 2-4) came up just one short Thursday night.

With the game tied going into the tenth inning, Fayetteville was unable to push across the go-ahead run in the top half before the Carolina Mudcats (36-36, 2-4) walked it off in the bottom half to take a 2-1 victory at Five County Stadium.

The Woodpeckers got another strong outing from starting pitcher Christian Mejias, who went 4.2 scoreless innings, surrendering just two hits and a pair of walks while striking out five. Mejias put together his second straight scoreless outing and has not allowed a run over his last 9.2 innings pitched.

Fayetteville picked up their only run in the top of the third inning. Cody Orr led off with a walk and advanced to second on a groundout from Leosdany Molina. Joey Loperfido then followed with a single to put Orr at third with one away. During the next at bat, Loperfido bolted for second base and slid in safely, drawing a throw down in the process. Meanwhile, Orr took off for home and a high throw allowed him to score and give the Woodpeckers a 1-0 lead.

Freylin Garcia got the final out of the fifth inning before Miguel Ullola came on for the sixth. Ullola retired the first two batters he faced before Carolina’s Eduardo Garcia drew a walk and promptly stole second base. Moments later, Zack Raabe singled to right field and Garcia came home to even the ballgame.

Ullola would settle down afterwards, pitching a total of four innings giving up just the one run on two hits, walking one batter and fanning six Carolina batters. His biggest out came in the bottom of the ninth when he got pinch hitter Jose Sibrian to ground out with Raabe on third base to end the inning and send the game to extras.

The Mudcats sent Karlos Morales (W, 2-3) to the mound to pitch the top of the tenth. With Yeuris Ramirez placed on second to start the inning, Morales got Orr to fly out, Molina to ground out, and struck out Loperfido swinging to give Carolina the advantage going into the bottom of the frame. Fayetteville countered with reliever Jacob DeLabio (L, 0-1), but Hendry Mendez ripped a 2-2 pitch to left field for a base hit. Jheremy Vargas, who came on as a defensive replacement for Sibrian in the top half, rounded third and scored to give the Mudcats the walk-off win and the series lead.

The Woodpeckers will look to even up the series once again Friday night in Zebulon as RHP Deylen Miley is slated to start. On the other side, Carolina gives the ball to RHP Stiven Cruz. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 ET.
